61. CARBS DURING EXERCISE: SOLID, GEL OR LIQUID?
In previous posts we saw the importance of ingesting carbs during exercise to increase performance during long rides (durability). This is probably due to glycogen saving. (Read more here) Considering carbs’ ingestion during exercise, we also saw that it is crucial to select the right glucose to fructose ratio depending on the amount of carbs (grams per hour) you are targeting. Another factor that we could consider is the form of carbs to ingest: solid, gel or liquid?
Does the form (solid vs gel vs liquid) of carbs ingested during exercise influence exogenous carbs oxidation and performance?
A study published by Hearris and Colleagues (Liverpool John Moores University, UK) in 2022 on Journal of Applied Physiology tried to answer this question. (1).
